Your Online Image #2

Your Online Image #2

You are the young manager of a local ice cream parlor that is beloved by local families. You are looking to hire some teens for the summer, when the shop is open late every evening. You require an application and at least one reference. It occurs to you that you could look on Facebook to find out a bit more about the applicants.

What might you find that would make you not hire someone?

Is there anything wrong with using Facebook in this way?

  1. You might find out that they party or aren't very serious. Maybe they are immature or have bad grades in school.

I don't think there is really anything wrong with it because you are putting it out there for people to see.

    2. I think that seeing those things on someones Facebook that your trying to hire is good because you need to know these things to hire someone. You can't have someone that isn't serious working for you.

    3. People who aren't mature or very serious shouldn't be helping you with your business.

  2. If someone would be trash talking my restaurant i would not hire them. I do not think it is wrong to use facebook this way.

    5. Well there is always the possibility;
Hate their job but are really good at it
Love their job but are really bad at it
Who would you keep on staff?

    6. I think it would be a good idea to check out their fb page to see what kind of person they are before you hire them.

    7. I agree, people who are bad mouthing your business/restaurant isn't someone you should have working for you. Then people hear what they are saying, and they might not want to go there anymore.

  3. You might find out that they post inappropriate comments or pictures of themselves and others, or that they don't take work seriously and are out partying most nights. There's nothing wrong with using Facebook to check up on people who you're thinking about hiring to make sure they're reliable.

    4. Facebook is a good way to find out about there life. They could be good and not do anything bad thats the person you want to hire.

    5. If they're always posting content that you wouldn't want them to say/do in real life don't hire them

  4. You could look to see if they are into partying or drugs, or look for what they post on Facebook. If they post inappropriate things like pictures or comment bad things, or if they have posted about a job before saying bad things they wouldn't be the right one to hire.

    1. I agree with you Cassi, you wouldn't want to hire a druggy or someone who trash talks their workplace.

    2. Yes, I think that posting inappropriate pictures and comments can lead you to not get the job.

  5. You could see the person is into drugs and underage drinking. This is the wrong way to use Facebook. They shouldn't post pictures of them doing drug nor there friends doing them. They shouldn't post pictures of them or friends drinking when they are underage they could get them or there friend into trouble.

    1. If they wouldn't want someone who has a chance of hiring you to see inappropriate things, then you shouldn't post them on social media.

      Delete
    2. That is a good point of view because underage drinking and drugs should not be apart of the workplace.

      Delete
    3. Yes I think they shouldn't post drinking pictures of them or friends in the first place or especially if they are looking to find a job.

  6. im not gonna not give someone a chance for at least 2 days im not gonna check there facebook because i honestly wouldn't care whats on there, grades all that don't matter either, all depends on how they do at work, rather have someone in the workforce than sitting at home living off there parents.

no theres nothing wrong with checking peoples facebook because you need to add them as a friend to see anything interesting anyway

  7. If some on there would be swearing and sharing bad stuff and guns and bad things that make you scared to hire them because people don't like how he talks so bad.

    1. well if whoever said a bad word there not a good person i guess

    2. I agree Jonny, people should know that anyone could see what you post and that may take away an opportunity to get hired.

      Delete
    3. That is a very good way to look at it. If they post bad things maybe they shouldn't work because would if they swear to the customers when they are taking their orders.

      Delete
    4. yeah you wanna make sure youll be safe if you hire them. Guns are bad

  8. You might not want to hire them if they have inappropriate content on their Facebook and are throwing shade at other people/business.

    1. Ya people could find out what kind of stuff they do and people might not go to that business.

      Delete
    2. yes but throwing shade has nothing to do with job performance and ethic

  9. People looking to hire might find on people's Facebook that they hate working or they say how lazy they are and want to skip work or school. I don't think if someone say that, that they would hire you. I don't think there's anything wrong with using Facebook this way because when you post something, you know that anyone can see it so it's your fault if it costs you your job or chance at one.

    1. Yeah if they skip school they are going to want to skip work

    2. I agree Justin, work ethic starts young, and if you don't learn it, you might never learn it.

  10. I might find out that they are rude on social media and that they post inappropriate things. Although you may find that they don't post bad things and that they are nice on social media. I would use social media because shows if the person does not care and is rude. i would not want someone to be rude working in my store.

    1. I agree by using social media you can see how they act online and maybe they act lie that in real life too. I wouldn't want a rude employee either. I think social media is a good idea to look at before hiring.

  11. You might find innaproprite posts to others. Some people are different on the internet than in real life. I would not use social media because they aren't going to act like that in work. Some people act stupid online because they won't get hurt by starting a fight on social media. Whoever they are fighting with the other can't physically hit them or hurt them, so that's why people like starting stuff online.

    1. I agree that they might not act like that at work and they might do it just for attention.

    2. yes this is how i think, a lot of people use social media as a way to escape from reality to a place where they can be themselves and be able to not be as judged for it

  12. Facebook is just as good, or better, resource for learning about someone than asking someone they know. Facebook is an example of the person's online image, how they would like to be seen, and what they are like around others. It's easy to see why people would say searching their Facebook page is 'Stalking' but really, it's just research on a person.
Let's say they they do drugs, or are bad with money, or are just a really lazy person. There are many reasons not to hire someone, and Facebook just is a tool to help weed out those that are not suited for the task. Just like any good boss or manager would do with other reviews, interviews, and essays for a job.

  16. You could find good or bad stuff out about the people you are looking to hire.you could find out the hang around with some people that are know for trouble or you could find out that they hang out with the better crowd of people that are not known for causing any trouble. or they could swear a lot or they have pictures of them drinking and smoking on the profile. and you may not want to hire them because of what you find.

  19. You might find out that they wouldn't be a good person to hire, they may do things that are bad and not a good person to have run your business while you're gone or out of town.

  20. Facebook is a good way to connect people, but is not always a serious thing if they want to base the way they act on Facebook, then you don't hire them you could've just lost a chance to hire a good worker.
