The Cloud

"The Cloud"

You've probably heard it said that the world has gotten smaller.  This is true because, since the development of the Internet (the 'Cloud') and such things as Tweeting, texting, instant messaging, social networking (Facebook, MySpace), we've grown much closer.  The distance between us, geographically, doesn't matter near as much anymore.

In many ways, this is a good thing.  But, in some ways - not so much.  While the world has grown closer together, we're also closer to those people who would try to hurt us or take advantage of us.  Most people are good - but it's easier than ever for those that aren't to target people who aren't prepared, or aware of the dangers.

So, you've just met a student who has NEVER been on the internet.  Their family just moved to the area, and just signed up for internet access at home for the first time.  Knowing what you know right now, what would you warn that person about?  What would you tell them to be careful of, when they're on the Web?  How would you tell them to behave - what precautions should they take?

You don't have to look this up - base it on what you already know - what you've already learned.  You CAN research a little on the internet, if you need to...

  1. Tell them on how to not click on the pop up adds. To set up parental controls so the younger children if they have any would not be influenced by the bad sides of the internet.

  3. When on the Internet you should be careful of people you don't know, they might try and hurt you or even try to get your personal information. You should also behave while on it, you shouldn't bully or hurt someone else's feelings while on it.

  4. Don't give out your personal information like your address or even your last name. It's not that good to show your face, atlas I wouldn't want to. When an add appears on screen, it's probably best to not download it even though it says it'll help your computer's speed because it's most likely going to give a virus to your computer and slow it down.

  5. The things on the internet are watch out for virus's. If you click on a link with a virus your computer will have to be fixed and brought to someone who can take them off and then the computer is usually slower.

    2. It is actually possible to fix software or malware viruses yourself, I have learned the hard way, but it it is possible. Hardware viruses however are near impossible fix with re-writing the base codes.

  10. You should probably be careful about hackers on the internet, don't post a bunch of your personal information where other people can access it either. Remember, there's always going to be someone out there who will be able to get ahold of it, so make sure there's not anything that you'd be ashamed. Also even if you delete a picture or a post you made years ago, it's still going to be out there somewhere.

  11. I would tell them to be careful of hackers and don't share your password to anything or your phone number. Don't tell anybody where you live and good chance if somebody says they know you there is a very small chance they actually do and anything you ever post with be out there for ever, even if you delete it.

    2. It is very rare that anyone would hack you, I mean, have you ever been hacked? and how much info of you is out there? My guess is a lot. Unless you have something of worth, AKA credit card, social security #, or bank accounts, they will most likely leave you alone.

  14. You always have to be careful on the internet because once you post something everybody can see what you post. If I were you I would try and stay off of social media because the only thing that it does is bring up drama. Just use the internet for researching for homework and Netflix. Be careful what you do on the internet.

  16. If someone who has never been online, just got a computer and got on the internet, I would tell them that. I would watch out what you post and what you say on there . because you cant delete stuff off the internet and there people trying to cause you harm on the internet. It is important to think about what you are doing online because you can get hurt, and also you can hurt others with your remarks.

  17. First two words; Be Careful. Step one; don't click on anything that pops up. Those are invested with malware and viruses which can destroy your device. Step two; careful on what you click, I'm not saying don't click on anything, just check what the source is before hand. Step three; Google is your friend. So far I have never gotten a virus by using Google Search or Maps. If you are looking for entertainment, youtube or a simple game webpage would be ideal. Certain game websites will require java, but it's OK! Java is a simple download and it's not necessary for all games. And finally, Step Four; Social Media. It's a widely used, international phenomenon which has everyone connected in some way it seems. (I personally don't have any social media; aka Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, Snapchat, Skype, or Instagram) But if you have an inexperience with the internet, I don't recommend creating an account. And final words; Wether you are using it for work or play, the internet is a whole other world, so play nice, be careful and have fun!
    To another commenter;
What do you think of this advice? Am I missing anything? What would you add?

  18. You have to be careful on the internet because there are people who try to scam you with fake ads and websites. You can get viruses on your computer from those. Don't talk to strangers because they could be a different person than who they say they are.

  19. people that use computers know you have to becareful one pop up add can lead to six diffrent viruses or problems thats may come up with your computer because you clicked on the add and no sharing personal info unless on a trusted site

  20. I would tell them not to give personal information out to random strangers and not to tell them your name because they could come and hurt you. And to be careful what you post because it is out there forever and can get posted and reposted over and over so you need to be careful for yourself and others.
