You're Messed Up!
You're addicted! You're messed up!
Read the following articles (don't forget to read some of the commentary after the articles). They all talk about the effects on teens from social networking, texting etc - all of this "new" technology.
What are the dangers? We're not talking about why the internet itself is dangerous - not talking about predators. We're talking about quality of life - your time; how social networking makes you feel about the world, and how it conditions you to behave. "Real life" vs. "online life".
Your first post should be about what the negative effects of your online life might be. How might things like social networking (Facebook, Twitter) affect you in a negative way. This is a difficult question, because you probably don't think that these things really are affecting you negatively. You can handle it, right?
THEN, after a day or two, in your response to a fellow student's post, argue in FAVOR of social networking - how does it 'enhance' your life - how does it make your life better?
This is a 'deep topic'. One sentence answers are NOT going to cut it, so really think about your answers, and argue your point.

Social Media is a good thing to keep people in touch but it is often overused. People overuse it by posting everything thing they're doing like walking to the park in town, this can also be dangerous because people will know where you'll be based off of your account.
ReplyDeleteyeah people are addicted to social media
DeleteJonny is right
DeleteUsing the Internet distracts you from real life. While you're always on your phone there are important things out there, and you're missing all of it.
ReplyDeletePeople are so addicted people don't talk to people
Deletephones are taking over the world
DeleteTrue, but I guess that social media still keeps people connected that otherwise wouldn't be able to be connected. Like a friend in another state.
DeleteThat's true Cassi, people are missing out.
Deleteyeah people stay connected to
DeletePeople are addicted to social media they don't ever talk in person and just stay on the internet
ReplyDeletePeople have to get out and talk to people in person.
Deleteya its getting out of hand.
DeletePeople aren't going to know how to talk to someone in person if they have too.
DeletePeople would rather look and be on their phones than see whats actually out in the real world.
Deletei agree they are on there phones and miss out on amazing thing because they are on there phones.
Deleteto many kids are on the internet they rather be on the computer or phone then be outside.
ReplyDeleteYeah they like there phones better then being outside
DeleteYes that is true but what if it is a rainy day then what are you suppose to do while you are stuck inside. The first thing that comes into there minds is the internet.
DeleteExactly, kids these days never want to go anywhere or do anything without their phones.
DeleteSocial Media is alright for some people. Some people just abuse it and use it for everything. It is unsafe to walk and go on Social Media is very dangerous. You could walk out into traffic. It is also a good thing because there can be some useful facts on the internet that you can use. Yes, kids use it a lot and yes, it can mess up your eyes. But that is one of the ways to communicate. The kids just need to get outside and be active.
ReplyDeleteI agree. At least it keeps people connected that otherwise wouldn't be able to be. Like friends or family in another state/country.
DeleteI agree there are people that use there phones for something and there are other people that use it all the time when they don't need to.
DeleteI agree that socia media isn't all bad. Adults don't realize that this is how we all get ahold of each other and know what's going on in each others' lives. I think it's a good way to stay connected to people who moved away so you can stay in touch with them.
DeleteI think kids shouldn't be able to have phones, they should enjoy their childhood. Also being inside playing video games all the time can cause you to gain weight because you aren't being active. I agree with you Catelyn.
DeleteIts good for poeple that dont abues it
DeleteSocial media is taking over a lot of people lives. People often take every comment and judgement to heart on social media. It takes over your time that you could be spending on other, more productive things, like actually talking to your friends and hanging out with them.
ReplyDeletePeople worry to much how many people like their picture and they become addicted and miss out on things.
DeleteYes true justin
DeleteI like justin post becuase that is fully 100 true
Deletepeople have to manage there internet use and control how they use it, if people are getting so butt hurt about the internet people will have to stop using it
ReplyDeleteIf people manage there use everyone would be better
DeleteTheres always problems with social networking, bullying like they said in the article but since most of us have been using the internet since we were young and all experienced hate or some type of negativity most people don't let it bother them, and a lot of people do like their online life better, they get to choose what happens, in the real life its so different and they don't get to choose.
ReplyDeleteThere is a lot of negative things out there on social media that effect teens nowadays. Most of the time when someone posts a picture and they don't get a decent amount of likes, they think that they're not as important anymore, or that nobody likes them. Also negative comments and messages DO make people feel worse about themselves, no matter how many times they say they don't. Social media is also hurting relationships, because if something happens in their personal relationship, they can just post about it and have a bunch of people jumping into it and making the relationship very public. Also if they don't feel satisfied with what their couple is doing, they can just hit someone else up online and talk to them which is hurting relationships too. It also cuts down on the amount of time people spend in person with each other or outside.
ReplyDeleteThis is a major point that I didn't touch on, and I am glad you did. I'm not the best at relationships, but from what I have observed in others; People are happier if they the relationship is not linked directly to social media. (Think about how long distance doesn't always work) But there are some exceptions.Have you ever seen a relationship that worked better connected?
DeleteI totally agree with you.
Deletethere is alot of negitive stuff on there and thats why there is cyber bulles
DeletePeople are addicted to social media and are using there phones and stuff way to much. But sometimes the internet can be helpful for people.
ReplyDeleteIt can be helpful but their are also other ways to find things out.
Deletethe internet can be helpful so can social media it helps news get around faster so people know whats going on
DeleteSocial media is not allowing people to enjoy vacations or everyday life because they are always looking at their phone or taking pictures. People will not be able to enjoy family time because they are on their phones. Kids are not paying attention in school because of phones and social media, which is affecting their grades. It's not just teens that are addicted to social media, some adults are too.
ReplyDeleteSocial media is taking over, people need put the cell phones on instead of being on them 24/7.
ReplyDeleteKids theses days aren't going to know how to talk without a phone
DeleteSocial media distracts everyone from actually enjoying what they're doing because they are too busy trying to get the perfect picture of where they are to actually just look around and enjoy it.
DeleteTeens go on social media to get away from the real world. Haveing cell phones affects grades also because if they are on the in class they aren't paying attention at all to the teacher they are paying attention to their phones. Having bad grades can cause teens to drop out of school too. To prevent that from happening I think students should have their phones in their laptop bags at all times.
ReplyDeleteI think the same having cell phones in school is distracting kids from doing their work.
DeleteI think that putting their phones in their laptop bags is a good idea. Some kids could use them for searching information also.
DeleteIf you were to have my opinion, Social Media and Virtual Social Lives are just a source of unnecessary stress that no one truly needs. But that's my opinion, it's not a rule of any sort.
ReplyDeleteReading through these articles, most of the data was collected from teens (13-19 year olds) when I really think that the generation that will truly suffer is the current 6-9 year olds.
Why? Because social media (Facebook, snapchat, etc.) wasn't 'in' until 2005 or later! This means that the teens today got a chance to experience at least a tiny portion of our lives OffLine. The 6-9 yr. olds have had this push to social media on them their whole lives.
What does this mean?
Well, let's see, Have you ever seen a child (younger than 6) holding, playing or communicating on a hi-tech device (Laptop, tablet, smart phone, etc.)? Of course you have. There have even been commercials about that exact thing.
But you might be asking, Why's that so bad?
What happens to addiction when you start young? It is much, much worse. This can continue to spread the 'narcissism epidemic' that has started in the teens.
From what I can tell, the more you are on social media, the more you think of "Me, Me and Me!" This thought process only of yourself can lead to harder relationships, more time alone, and ultimately, lack of emotion towards others.
Now tell me how social media is a 'Good' thing, when so much of it is nothing but self absorbed, attention seeking, and peer pressure to 'do' it.
Social media can keep people away from work but if people learned time management we wouldn't have a problem.
ReplyDeletei dissagree with you lane beacuse beacuse its there choice
DeleteA lot of teens now a days are addicted to social media. Instead of enjoying life everyday or going to do something they sit on their phones, laptops, tablets, etc. Teens also are on their phones during classes which cause them to not pay attention to what is going on in class. Also a lot of times you see younger kids under the age of 10 that have phones, or iPads, other tablets and they don't go outside and enjoy their childhood instead they are on their electronics.
ReplyDeleteI think teens should enjoy life too. I think you should be a certain age to get a phone because when you are a kid you should go outside and have fun with friends instead of being inside and playing a video game.
DeleteMy brothers have iPads and iPhones and I agree that it is taking away the enjoyment of their childhood.
DeleteEven though social media and electronic games can be addicting, there is still hope! People who do have social media are more connected to the world around them, opening up more appertains to them (Like right place, right time scenarios) and even more international connections. Social media isn't all bad, because if it truly was the terrible, terrible thing, we would have gotten rid of it (Or blocked it) long ago.
ReplyDeleteNot everyone uses it on a daily basis, and most only use it for work purposes. This men that people still have self discipline and control over their actions, which is the way it should be.
Do you think there can be a world with equal virtual and reality? If so, How would your life change?
I think what you're saying is true.
DeleteI think that all soiacl media should not be allowed its bad news
ReplyDeletethis is true scott alot of bad stuff happends on there
Deletenot all of it is bad news some may be but not all
Deletenot all of it is bad news some may be but not all
Deletei think that it should be taken away from little kids beacuse its taking away from there child hood and from being outside and doing fun activites
ReplyDeletei dissagre with you because its there chocie on what they want to do
