The Internet of Things (IoT)

The "Internet of Things" (IoT)

- The screen on you refrigerator tells you that your blood sugar is running low, so you grab some fruit.

- While flying to your vacation destination, you realize that you forgot to turn the thermostat down at home, so you do it from your smart phone.

- Your car is about due for an oil change (using that fancy synthetic oil you like), and your mechanic is ready for you, because he monitors your engine, as well as his supply of synthetics.

This might sound like the future, or maybe you've heard of one of these things already happening - both are true. They're examples of what things might be like with the "Internet of Things".

In the IoT, EVERYTHING is connected via the internet (cloud): cars, appliances, planes, security, hospitals, animals and.....yes, you. The idea is that everything will communicate, and, in the end, this communication will help us to lead better lives.

"The Internet of Things is the next generation of personal computing, whereby objects interact, potentially independently, with each other and with their environment,”

"The Internet of Things is the combination of sensors, actuators, distributed computing power..."

"Tiny detectors that can gather and relay data about location, activity, and health...", "The IoT makes it possible to monitor and control the location, condition, and behavior of objects, machinery and devices through networks."

Here are some resources to look at that will help you understand the IoT. Take a look at them, and talk about what you think about the idea. Pros and cons.

Tech Crunch: We Need to Get the IoT Right

A Hacker's-eye View of the IoT

  1. I think it would be helpful to have everything connected, but also very expensive. But if your phone is dead then something won't be able to work, like you can' shut your garage while your away if your phone is dead. Each device relies on each other, but I still think it'll be really helpful.

    1. Yeah a system like that would definitely be expensive and most people wouldn't be able to afford it.

    2. It would be very expensive

    3. yes it would be expensive

  2. I think the IoT is a good idea and could definitely help with our lives. The only down side I see is hackers getting into your system and being able to either control your things or gain private information about you. Or if people become dependent on the system and it goes down or gets hacked people will probably go crazy and the whole world will turn into a big mess.

    1. It probably wouldn't be too hard to hack this system either and given the fact that everyone would be using it, hackers could get all the information on anyone they wanted to.

    2. That would be very bad if people could control things like your temperature and other things, that could get out of hand.

    3. I agree, having hackers have the opportunity to control things in your house or other things that you have.

  3. Some pros are that if you did forget to turn off something in your house your phone can just warn you and you can turn it off by your smart phone. Cons that if you did have an oil change what if your car wasnt ready for one and your phone automatically made an appointment for you to bring your car there. What if you werent even home. What if you were on vacation. Then what would you do?

    1. Also if you're able to control your life from your phone then it would make people way more dependent on the Internet & if the internet were to crash, so would our lives.

      Delete
    2. yes it would. We should try to use as less internet as possible I think.

    3. I agree things could go wrong and start doing it on their own when it doesn't need to happen.

    4. People are so dependent on technology already, that sometimes we forget that there was thousands of years without it. We evolved with our environments, and if that changes to a dependency on the technology we created, then how will it change us? Unlikely it would be a good change. And if the dependency becomes too strong, what would happen to us if it were to crash entirely?

    5. So many things could go wrong I think it is best to stay off of too much technology.

  4. I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to have everything connected so if you forgot to do something at home you could do it from wherever you are. Also though if you're able to turn on an alarm system from your phone, who says someone else couldn't turn it off from their's and rob you? Having everything connected may seem like a great idea until you start digging deeper into it and realizing all the risks that are actually attached.

    1. Yeah I agree the risks you take by having this system makes you question whether it's worth it.

      Delete
    2. Yeah. People could probably hack into your security system and break into your house.

      Delete
    3. Yeah there are a lot of risks with having everything connected if you think about it. But the good part would be having it if you needed to do something.

      Delete
    4. yes this would be a very bad thing, but also firewalls, and having it so there is a passcode on said device

  5. It would be very useful to be able to have everything connected through devices. You can do something by the click of a button or like they said if you forget to do something at home you can do it on your phone like change the heat. But also if something were to happen to your device you wouldn't be able to do anything. Or if something happened to your phone where things went wrong, and it started turning and shutting things of without you knowing.

    1. yeah if your phone broke your screwed

    2. I agree with that it is very useful and handy but if your phone breaks that is not good especially on a trip. It might be hard to get a new phone when you aren't home. Even if your phone starts to glitch, it could open everything and start your A/C or heat and not knowing would be very very bad.

    3. That would have to be a really good system because people would rely on this and it would always have to be working good and fast.

    5. But if your phone died or broke then it would be useless and you would be miserable.

  6. ITs cool but if your phone dies you can't do anything. Or if someone steals your phone or it breaks someone could break into your house or you can't get in because your phone is broke.

    1. I agree on that and especially if you're in an airport sometimes the outlets are already used. If your phone breaks that would be horrible too because you wouldn't be able to lock the doors or do anything else on it

      Delete
    2. yeah i agree if your phone broke that would suck.

      Delete
    3. would have to do it the old fashion way, call your mom with someones phone and ask her to lock your doors

      Delete
    4. It would suck if your phone died but you could always have a old fashioned lock on your back door incase it dose die then you just make sure you have your key so you can get in

  7. I think the pros are that you have everything that you need at your fingertips, cons are that all the technology can get annoying. You'll be missing out on life because everything will be digital and you won't even have a reason to leave your house in the long run.

  8. It's a really good idea to have things connected to your phone or laptop because if you go on a trip and you won't be back for a while and you forgot to lock your front door you could go on your phone and lock it. There is also bad things about it being connected to your phone also somebody could steal your phone and open everything. Maybe everything is better off without it.

    1. I agree that it is not safe but maybe they could find a way to make it safe. I was thinking that everything is better off without it too and that maybe we should stick to keys and the doing everything manually.

  9. The IoT is currently very easily hacked and not working as well as it's worth. I certainly don't trust tech very much, but after running it through many more tests, there may be a shot at achieving the desired goal; to have everything and everyone connected.

    1. Electronics could be hacked but they usually aren't. I think its a good idea to have everything you want at your finger tips. Plus you'll only be hacked if someone has a reason to hack you in the first place.

  10. It is nice to have everything connected but the problem with that is people could hack it and then get into your house or something worse. It is helping us live longer and keep things safe. People can steal your phone also and get into your personal stuff.

  11. I think it is nice to be connected but the threat of being hacked really sucks.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They probably would have to do things to prevent hackers and that would take a couple of years

      Delete
    2. Yeah, being connected to everything you need through the Internet is nice, but I'd be worried about hackers the whole time.

  12. what if you have android and its a apple product

    1. They would probably make it for android too.

  13. There are some things that people are able to do now by using there phone the can control some things like your lights, heat and locks on the doors and securty cams. it can be nice to have stuff connected but it can also be bad what happens if you accdently hit one of your controls on your phone for the house and it turns the heat up way to hot or kills the power or unlocks your doors

    1. What happens when you lock your phone in the house

  14. It would be nice to be connected to things but what if you don't have the phone that has the program, and what about hackers, I'm sure all of your info will be one it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. well they would make the program accessible to all phone platforms, and hackers? well they have a thing that shows you where what and who accessed the software

  15. I think it would be a good idea to be able to do things like if you forgot to do something at your house when you've already left, you could be able to close your garage or possibly turn the stove or oven off, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Its a nice option for people to have but it would also come with pros and cons, say someone wanted to get into your house they could steal the little button thing that you use to shut your door and use it to open it
